Family History

Fridays 9:30am – 12:00pm.

The Family History Group is a self-help group whose members meet to exchange ideas and help each other research their family trees. Experienced volunteers can also offer advice. This may be to discuss the research materials available or help guide you around the leading genealogy websites available online.

Long-term members usually explore all lines of their family tree. Whilst some people join to investigate one group of ancestors. Or even just one ancestor. All families have a story that everyone knows needs further investigation. Researching the period an ancestor lived through leads to a greater understanding of their way of life. Perhaps even just looking at one event can be interesting. Exactly where in France was Great Uncle Albert in 1917? Why did my ancestor join the Luddites? When were my ancestors eligible to vote? You never know what you may find!

There is a short break at 10.30 am. Tea and coffee are available for a small charge.

Interested? Come in and have a chat. If you have already started looking at your genealogy, bring along your notes and sources of information. Volunteers with research experience able to help others are always welcome.

There is a weekly contribution of £4. This goes towards the cost of paper, printer ink, and printers. It also helps cover the running costs of Age Concern. Users of the centre pay an annual subscription, which is renewable on 1st January. In 2025, this was £10.
